what is structured cabling?

The Basics

Structured cabling refers to the physical installation of copper and fiber wiring or cabling that comprise a building’s network or other systemic technology. Each device typically has a cable installed back to a network rack and switch.

Horizontal Cabling

The cabling installed between device and network switch

Backbone Cabling (Vertical Cabling)

The cabling installed between network switches or main network rooms (MDF) and their smaller satellite rooms (IDF)

ISP Cabling

Internet Service Providers require cabling (copper or fiber between their equipment when it lands in the building to each customer. These are commonly called 'demarcation extensions.'

Outside Plant

The physical cabling and supporting infrastructure (such as conduit, cabinets, tower or poles), and any associated hardware (such as repeaters) located between a demarcation point in a switching facility and a demarcation point in another switching center or customer premise.
